1. General Information
Founded in 1953, the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (SCSFRI) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) is a forward-looking national research organization undertaking studies of tropical and subtropical fishery sciences. As the earliest founded national fishery institute, it is affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture of China and located at Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. There are 325 staffs, including 177 researching staffs with 49 professors and 73 assistant professors and 67.7% with Degree of Master or Doctor. The missions are to promote the development of fishery sciences, to support governments in decision-making, and to provide technical supports for sustainable, steady and healthy development of modern fishery by studying global, basic and key subjects faced in the development of fishery industry. To increase the income of fishery farmers, efficiency of fishery production, and competitiveness of fishery products, basic and applied fishery researches are emphasized with the focus on high and key techniques able to promote fast development of the industry through significantly promoting innovation abilities in original fishery sciences, industrial integration of techniques, and assimilation and reformation of imported techniques.
There are six research departments in the institute, i.e. Dept. of Aquaculture and Biotechnology, Dept. of Fishery Resource, Dept. of Fishery Environment, Dept. of Fishery Food Engineering and Quality Safety, Dept. of Fishery Engineering and Dept. of Fishery Disease and Prevention for research works. And there are nine administrative divisions, including Administrative Office, Division of Human Resource, Division of Science and Technology, Division of Finance, Center for Technology Transfer, Information Center (including library and museum), Centre for Logistics. Besides, there are four stations outside Guangzhou and a enterprise. They are Center for Tropical Fishery R&D (Sanya, Hainan), Shenzhen Experimental Station (Daya Bay, Guangdong), Huadu Experimental Station (Huadu, Guangzhou), Survey Ship Base (Guangzhou) and Feed and Healthy Culture Center.
There are six key laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) based on the institute, including Open Key Lab. of Fishery Ecological Environment of MOA, Inspection and Test Center for Fishery Environment and Product Quality, Center for South China Sea Mariculture Disease Prevention and Control, Inspection Center for South China Sea Fishery Ecological Environment, Field Observation Station of South China Sea Fishery Resource and Environment, and Genetic Breeding Center for Shrimp Penaeus monodon. Guangdong Provincial Key Lab. of Fishery Ecological Environment, and Open Key Lab. of Fishery Germplasm and Culture Technology of CAFS are also built in this institute.
3. Research Fields
Research activities in the institute involve more than ten respects, including fishery resources protection and utilization, fishery ecological environment, healthy aquaculture, genetic breeding, aquaculture biotechnology, fishery disease prevention and cure, fishery products process and integrated use, safety control of fishery products quality, fishery equipment and engineering, and fishery information technology.
In the field of fishery resources investigation by SCSFRI, researches are focused on marine ecosystem dynamics and fishery management, monitoring and assessment of fishery stocks, stock enhancement and marine ranching, conservation of aquatic wild animals. In the fields of fishery ecological environment, researches are focused on pollution effect on aquatic organism, fishery environmental capacity and environmental restoring, fishery environment and biodiversity protection, techniques on the fishery environment monitoring and the detection of aquatic products quality. The laboratory has 21 research members, including 4 professors, 5 associate professors and 5 assistant research scientists, while 2 members hold the doctor’s degree and 10 members hold the master’s degree.

In the fields of healthy aquaculture which stands in the frontier of world aquaculture science, comprehensively applies multidisciplinary techniques, researches are focused on the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) technology and environment friendly aquaculture technology, using microorganisms to meliorate aquaculture environment and through developing finfish-shrimp-shellfish-macroalgae polyculture system.

In the fields of genetic resources and genetic breeding, researches are focused on genetic diversities and genetic estimations of tropical marine species, and genetic breeding of tropical mariculture variety. The genetic diversity levels and resource status of sparidae fish were systemically investigated; the genetic improvements of black tiger shrimp and pearl oyster were carried out, which acquired most important progress and produced several new strains.

In the field of aquaculture biotechnology, researches are focused on gene cloning, functional genomics, gene transfer, and bioengineering breeding of finfish, prawn, mollusk and algae.

In the fields of fishery disease prevention and cure, researches are focused on marine fish bacterial disease immunization, marine shellfish pathology and control of pathogens, shrimp immunity and disease control.
