Annual Meeting of the Project of Polyethylene Materials Offshore Cage Equipment and Culture Technology Held in Shanghai

The annual meeting of the project of Offshore Cage with Polyethylene Net and Its Culture Technology Research was held in Shanghai on March 1 2008, which is undertaken by East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (ECSFRI, CAFS).

At present, the research team are researching on high performance polyethylene netting, rope matrix materials selection, structure and technology optimization, selective breeding of fishes suitable for deep water cage culture and large scale artificial breeding technology for Malabar grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus). They also conducted surveys concerning hydrology, geology, water depth, etc in the target sea areas. The design and experiment of a new type of offshore deep water cage—“automatic flow reduction and low shape variation deep water cage in offshore areas” was developed. The new cage was developed based on popular HDPE double tube round cage and meant to improve volume maintaining capacity in rough sea conditions. Its design objective is to be applicable and economical at the same time. It was found that the automatic flow reduction and low shape variation deep water cage could keep 80% of volume maintaining capacity at a water flow of 1.5 meter/second. At present, the components have been under assembly and experiment.
