IMAR and NOAA’s Scholars Visits South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (SCFRI)

Professor Joao G. Ferreira with IMAR in Portugal and Dr. Suzanne Bricker with NOAA in U.S.A visited South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (SCSFRI) on April 3, 2008. During the visit, they attended the international symposium “Ecosystem modeling and evaluation on state of eutrophication in marine environment”sponsored by SCSFR. More than 40 researchers and graduate students took part in the symposium. Dr. Joao G. Ferreira used to be the team leader of two EU-China cooperative research programs, and Dr. Suzanne Bricker is the author for ASSETS. They are both celebrated researchers in the field of marine ecological study. During the symposium, Dr. Joao G. Ferreira gave an address on ecological modeling of bay (large scale) and aquaculture (small scale) sites. Dr. Suzanne Bricker presents the research on evaluation system of eutrophication in offshore areas “ASSETS”. Researcher from SCSFR also gave several presentations, including Composite Index evaluation method for marine environment and its application in South China Sea, and the status of aquaculture in Guangdong Province and the research progresses in aquaculture in SCSFR. Researchers had a lively discussion and exchange concerning aquaculture, ecosystem modeling and eutrophication evaluation. They also discussed the possibilities for further cooperative research programs and made clear of several areas of potential collaboration. Agreement was reached by the end of symposium that SCSFR-NOAA-IMAR would further promote personnel exchanges, especially for young talented trainees and visiting researches.
